Euchre is typically a four-person card game played with 24 cards; 9-10-J-Q-K-A of all four suits from a standard 52-card deck. The players are paired into two partnerships or teams. Partners are seated across the table from each other. Play is conducted sequentially in clockwise order around the table so that play alternates between players from each team. The simple diagram below shows the player arrangement and the direction of play. Red team vs Blue team Euchre is a trick game, in that each team is trying to win a majority of the tricks available in each hand. A trick is a round of cards in which one person leads by playing one of his cards face up in the center of the table and the others attempt to win the round (the trick) by playing the highest ranking card during that round. As each player is dealt 5 cards each hand, there are 5 tricks available every hand. The objective is to win at least 3 of the tricks each hand. Euchre is also a trump game. Every hand one suit is determined to be trump. All of the cards of the trump suit are now wild cards that outrank all the cards from all the other suits. The nine of the trump suit outranks the aces from the other three suits. If a player leads an ace that is not trump, and another player follows by playing a card from the trump suit, then the trump suit card will win the trick unless a subsequent player plays a higher trump card (called out-trumping). After the cards are dealt, trump must be named (chosen). The team that names trump must win at least 3 tricks during that hand. If they win 3 or 4 tricks, they earn 1 point. If they win all 5 tricks they earn 2 points. If the team naming trump fails to get at least 3 tricks then the opposing team earns 2 points. Failing to win 3 tricks after naming trump is commonly referred to as getting set or getting euchred. Sometimes a player is dealt such a strong hand that he believes he has a very good chance of winning all 5 of the tricks by himself. In such a circumstance that player may decide to go alone. When a player goes alone, his partner folds his hand onto the table and does not participate in trying to win any tricks. If the player going alone manages to take all 5 tricks, that team earns 4 points. If the player going alone takes 3 or 4 tricks, then the team earns the usual 1 point. If the player going alone gets euchred (fails to win at least 3 tricks), the opposing team earns 2 points. A game of euchre is played to 10 points. The first team to reach 10 points wins.
